Oral surgery-treats disease, injury or defect of the gums, teeth, and jaw

Oral surgery is the specialty of dentistry that includes the diagnosis, surgical and related treatment of diseases, injuries and defects involving both the functional and aesthetic aspects of the hard and soft tissues of the mouth, teeth, gums and jaws. Oral surgeons specialize in treating conditions such as problem wisdom teeth, facial pain, and misaligned jaws. They treat accident victims suffering facial injuries, offer reconstructive and dental implant surgery, and care for patients with tumours and cysts of the jaws.

A number of conditions may require oral surgery, including:

Impacted Wisdom teeth: Wisdom teeth that fail to emerge in proper alignment or fail to fully emerge through the gum line can result in swelling, pain, infection of the gum tissue and can sometimes lead to the formation of cysts or tumours that can destroy sections of the jaw. Therefore, dentists recommend oral surgery to have these teeth surgically removed.

Dental Implants: Dental implants are anchored into the jawbone through oral surgery.
